STIHL String Trimmer
in field Research:
I traveled to Spring Grove Cemetery to shadow Ben Jeffries, one of the many landscapers working there. The goal was to identify any pain points with the tools he uses every day. The main tool we focused on was the string trimmer.
Ideation & Research:
Using the information gained from shadowing Ben, and researching online an outline was made showcasing how the string trimmer is set up. Graphs were also made showcasing current string trimmers and where the new design would fit against other brands. After this, some concept sketches were made.
Low Fidelity models:
Foam models were made to get an idea of size and ergonomics.
3d Modeling:
3d Renders:
3d Printing & CNC Fabrication:
The CAD model for the body of the trimmer was made with a CNC router and high density foam. The shaft was made with PVC and the handle and head was made with a 3D printer.
Final Poster & Presentation:
For the final presentation a poster was made to showcase all of the work done over the semester.
